- 2003 Juror Susan Edwards

The 2003  Fellowship fund was juried by Susan Edwards, Director of the Katonah Museum of Art, Katonah, NY. There were a high number of submissions for the 2003 Fellowship Fund and the pool of portfolios showed extraordinary strength, proving once again that the upstate New York region is home to and inspiration for numerous talented artists.

We are pleased to announce this years winners, Carla Shapiro of Chichester and J. Gilbert Plantinga of New Paltz. Each received $1000 to assist them in pursuing their artistic goals.

In discussing the work of Carla and Gilbert, Susan Edwards said "Each of them bring a fresh and exciting approach to well traveled roads of photography."

Carla Shapiro's work was recently included Once Upon a Time: When the Fairy Tale Ends curated by Colleen Kenyon. She is an instructor at Pratt Art Institute in Brooklyn, NY.

For J. Gilbert Plantinga, this is the first major acknowledgment of his photographic work. Since October 2002, Plantinga has been studying with the photographer Ben Lifson and showing his work at galleries in the New Paltz region.
