Born in Vietnam, Chen grew up in America, first began photographing in Vietnam in 2000. Having grown up looking at images of Vietnamese people made by other people, Chen wanted to create a new set of pictures that could transcend the images of Vietnam to which the world has grown accustomed, and to use a new visual grammar with which we can talk about Vietnam. Centennial Exhibition curated by Nancy Greene & Tom WolfIn the winter of 1902, construction of the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony began on Mount Guardian just outside the hamlet of Woodstock NY. 7 farms, 1500 acres in all, were purchased by a Englishman named Ralph Radcliffe Whitehead. Upon its completion in 1903, 30 buildings stood comprising what has been referred to as a "textbook example" of a utopian Arts and Crafts community. The subject of Klapstock's work is overlooked environments in the city – everyday spaces that are somewhat unfamiliar and marginally inhabited, but nevertheless imprinted with the ‘residue’ of human presence. Since 1998, she has focused on the laneways around her neighborhood, using macroscopic photography to document surface fragments of this environment. |
