RUTH
BERNHARD, San
Francisco, CA
Hailed
by Ansel Adams as "the greatest photographer of the nude," Ruth
Bernhard is an icon in the photographic world, both as an artist and an
educator. Still
active at 95, it is her art, not her age, which places her in the pantheon of
the masters. Starting as a commercial photographer in NYC in 1927, Bernhard met
Edward Weston while on a trip to California in 1935 and his work inspired her to
the potential of photography as art. We were honored when Ruth journeyed from
California to teach a Master class workshop that riveted her audience and left
our vision forever changed. She had her first show at the Center in 1984 and
continues to be an energetic supporter of CPW – sending new talent our way and
auction gifts each year.
