Laura Calfee began to examine place-bound families by tape recording stories and photographing homes several years ago. She has found that people all share a strong sense of place and belonging and her work focuses on years of interwoven relationships. Perpetually questioning – why do they stay – family histories speak volumes about who they are and what really matters to them. Calfee, a resident of Driftwood, Texas, has studied with Duane Michals, Sam Abell, Debbie Fleming Caffery, and John Szarkowski. She is the recipient of a local history project grant from the Texas Historical Commission and her work has been presented at Blue Sky Gallery in Oregon and the Galveston Arts Center in Texas.
