Helen Stummer

Helen Stummer, a resident of Metuchen, NJ, is the author and photographer of No Easy Walk, Newark, 1980-1993, published by Temple University Press. As an outlet for my anger and rage against injustices that face people, especially people of color in the inner cities, I explore the human condition – as a witness. As a Messenger –I hold up a mirror to society to create images that have an emotional impact. I use art to educate, to act as a wake up call, to show and to change the wrongs that surround us. Stummer has shown her work at O.K. Harris and the International Center for Photography, both in NYC. She has received awards from the National Museum of Women in the Arts, DC, the Mid-Atlantic Arts, and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Published in the New York Times, William Zimmer writes: “This is heartfelt documentation.”
