As an artist, I’m constantly looking for ways to counteract the flatness that’s inherent to the medium of photography: weaving, folding, cutting, or interlacing prints are all different attempts at realizing that. In this series, Defining You, I try to merge form with content in order to address the topics of childhood memories and experiences. In this project I have woven the subject’s own childhood photographs around their portrait to activate processes of memory and identification to ask how much of a person’s childhood experiences help define who they are presently.

Gabriel Garcia Roman was born in Zacatecas, Mexico and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He is currently completing his BA in Studio Art at City College of New York. Gabriel’s work has been exhibited at Coastal Arts League (Half Moon Bay, CA), Gromley Gallery (Baltimore, MD), James Cohan Gallery, and School of Visual Arts, both in NYC, among other venues.
