Deborah Edmeades

I have always used my art practice as a way to own and know the self. Much of my work has focused on personal childhood ritual/fetish/expression. Over the last seven or eight years I have been studying acting technique, which has greatly informed the work. I work extensively with the concept of persona, the clashing of the inner and outer self, the material and the energetic.

Deborah Edmeades, born in the United Kingdom, spent 17 years living in South Africa, and now lives in New York City. A fine art graduate of Johannesburg Art Foundation, Edmeades has shown her work in NYC at Franklin Furnace, Wow Café, Exit Art, the Mix Festival, Jack Tilton Gallery, and abroad at venues in Canada, Austria, Brazil, and Korea. Her work has been featured in the Village Voice, the History of the Future, and the Columbia Journal of Literature and Art. She has taught Performance as a visiting Artist at the University of Texas in Austin and served on Franklin Furnace Peer Review Panel and MIX 13 program committee.
