Craig J. Barber: Palladium Printing Discount Applies

Saturday-Sunday, July 7-8

Have you ever been frustrated because your silver or digital prints weren’t able to deliver all the information your negatives offered? Palladium printing, a time-honored process and the print method choice of Paul Strand, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, and Frederick Evans, is known for its rich tonal scale, sensuality, and permanence. Master printer Craig J. Barber offers you a great opportunity to spend a weekend being introduced to this extraordinary hand-coated printing technique.

In this hands-on, two day workshop you will learn how to make palladium prints working from your own pre-existing black-and-white negatives from traditional film or made digitally! Barber will carefully lead you through a combination of demonstrations, discussions, and applications. You will learn about paper selection, contrast and controls, dodging and burning, developer variations, and chemical safety. This workshop is for photographers who have a sound foundation in black-and-white printing and want two days of hands-on instruction to learn a new process with ample printing time and support from Craig. Come prepared to work and have fun!

BARBER is a photographer who uses antiquarian processes and focuses of the cultural landscape.  During the past 15 years he has photographed Viet Nam, Havana, and the Catskill region of New York State, documenting cultures in rapid transition and fading from memory.  His work has been exhibited throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America and is represented in several prominent museum and private collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; and the George Eastman House, Rochester, NY, among others.  He has received several grants for his projects.  His book, Ghosts in the Landscape: Vietnam Revisited, was published in 2006. www.craigbarber.com

Charise Isis: Women Seeing Women Saturday-Sunday, July 7-8

Structured within an all women learning environment, this class will provide an opportunity to deeply explore the realms of the female psyche and how it relates to the female form and within photography. This class will seek to look beyond the obvious and often damaging images of women in fashion and media, developing our skills as photographers to take a more meaningful look into the lives of women. Through class discussion, critique, and studying female photographers of the past, we will explore the intention of each individual photographer, providing a forum to learn new tools and techniques to better realize our photographic goals and personal voices. Students will be given instruction on how to work with models and ample time to shoot one-on-one in both documentary style and portrait format.

CHARISE ISIS' work challenges society’s impossible standards of beauty allowing women of all different ages and body types, and in varying transitional phases of life, to be able to express their sensuality and beauty. Her photographs have been widely exhibited nationally and internationally, including solo shows at the Michael Mazzeo Gallery (NYC), The Griffin Museum of Photography (Winchester MA) and CPW. Additionally, her work is featured in a number of prestigious collections and has been published in Photography Quarterly, Profifoto Magazine, and NY Arts Magazine. Isis’ current project Grace, in which she is documenting the courage of women who have undergone mastectomies, is fiscally sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts. www.isisimages.net

Jeannette Rodriguez-Pineda: Teen Camp:
Antiquarian Photographic Processes
Discount Applies
Wednesday-Friday, July 11-13, 10 AM - 3 PM

Did you ever wonder how photographs were commonly made in the 19th century? Are you interested in getting your hands dirty while making an image? Tired of everything “digital”? In this 3-day introductory workshop, teens will learn the history and fundamentals of antiquarian photographic processes.

We will begin with the Cyanotype, a non-silver iron process that produces unique, blue-toned prints. Then we will transition to Vandyke printing, a process that produces a deep brown image. Lastly, using sodium chloride, or more commonly salt, you will study the first process that allowed for the reproduction of positive prints in the history of photography. Each of these historic processes involves creating a light sensitive emulsion that is applied to paper, then contact printed with the sun or a UV light source. In addition to printing, this class will explore chemistry preparation, procedures for hand coating, and paper options.

By the end of the workshop, you will leave with a basic knowledge of these three historic processes, which can all safely and easily be practiced at home.

JEANNETTE RODRIGUEZ-PINEDA is a photographer and mixed media artist living and working in Queens, NY. In 2010 she was an Artist-in-Residence at CPW. In this workshop photographers will examine the growing role of DSLR video in contemporary photography and how it can enhance their own pursuits. Students will learn the benefits of incorporating motion and other types of multimedia into their work and explore its possibilities as a means of telling compelling stories. Are you excited about making photographs? Do you want to explore your talents while engaging with other young artists? This Camp provides a unique, creative and supportive learning environment for teenagers ages 13 through 17. Over the course of four inspiring and motivating days, you will learn about the aesthetics and technical capabilities of digital photography.
