Angelika Rinnhofer: Studio Lighting Sat-Sun, October 2-3

This two-day workshop is designed for photographers who want to find out about the endless possibilities of artificial lighting techniques. To light a subject is to control its representation. From the flickering torch light of cave painters to Leonardo da Vinci's light room to the use of digital flash– artificial light sources have been essential for creating images throughout history.

Combining presentations on equipment and technique with plenty of hands-on shooting experience, this class will concentrate on how to evaluate and better use light for in-studio portraiture and any on location situations you might encounter.  This class will also cover the technical essentials and common pitfalls of metering for accurate exposure time, using strobe vs. tungsten lighting, operating modeling lights and using accessories like softboxes, effect lights and reflectors.

You will spend time photographing with a model while Rinnhofer demonstrates how light influences shapes and influences the subject. She will demonstrate a portrait session with a large format camera and Polaroid back, which all the students will have a chance to try. No prior lighting experience is required. You’ll leave this workshop with new abilities and be able to confidently confront a broad range of lighting situations.

ANGELIKA RINNHOFER received her education as photographer in Nuremberg, Germany; first at the Fachoberschule für Gestaltung, a two-year art school, and then at Foto Bischoff & Broehl, a commercial photography studio.  In 1995 she moved to the US and worked as a freelance photographer for clients including the Trump Organization and the German Chamber of Commerce in New York. About six years ago she decided to focus on a career as an artist. Since then her work has been widely exhibited in gallery shows Paul Kopeikin in Los Angeles, Bernice Steinbaum in Miami, Michele Mosko in Denver, and in museums including the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut, the Museum Industriekultur in Nuremberg, and The Queens Museum of Art, NY. She has received a grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts, fellowships from the Dutchess Council Arts Council and Light Work, and international awards from Kodak and Agfa-Gaevert. Her work has been published, among others, in Contact Sheet, PQ, Photo District News, Professional Photographer, and in Migrate Magazine. At the moment Angelika is working on a collaborative project in her hometown. More about Angelika can be found at www.angelikarinnhofer.com.

Please bring your favorite camera and lots of film or memory cards / images from books or magazines with examples of lighting that interests you.

Doug Menuez: Art vs. Commerce: Find the Balance

NEW DATES!!!
Sat-Sun, October 2-3

Back for the fourth year in a row due to popular demand! In this two-day workshop you will learn strategies to find the balance between personal and commercial work in order to build a satisfying creative life in photography for the long term. A workshop for all kinds and levels of photographers, and especially for those who’ve reached a plateau in their careers, who want to make a break through creatively, and reconcile the never ending conflict between doing the work you love and what you must do to pay the bills. Award-winning documentary photographer, Doug Menuez, will share what he’s learned about keeping your voice in a commercial world and provide practical solutions for changing your life and work.

Combining portfolio review, dialogue, and practical applications, you will learn new strategies for success including how to edit the strongest possible portfolio, self-financing personal projects, finding sponsors, landing the most rewarding commercial work, and pain-free financial management skills that most artists never learn. You will also review work by the legends – famous fine art photographers and photojournalists who have succeeded in taking commercial assignments without compromising their vision or integrity. Additionally we will examine how money talks: including proven marketing techniques, cash flow management tools, budgeting, writing book and project proposals, and other core survival skills that every photographer - fine art, photojournalist, or commercial shooter- must know to thrive. You will leave this workshop with a clearly defined vision of yourself and your work, a refined portfolio, and a working understanding of basic business and marketing skills you’ll need to move ahead!

DOUG MENUEZ spent 25 intense years traversing the globe after leaving art school for photojournalism, and then becoming one of the most successful advertising photographers in the US. Starting at the Washington Post and then freelancing for Time, Newsweek, Life, Fortune, and People, he covered assignments ranging from the famine in Ethiopia, to sports and celebrities, to the AIDS crisis. Menuez has made portraits of everyone from Mother Teresa to Robert Redford and President Clinton. His long-term personal work covering Silicon Valley led him to award winning commercial work where he was able to bring his documentary eye to campaigns for Chevy, Coke, Emirates Airlines, Bank of America, Hewlett Packard, Siemens, and Nokia, among others. These commissions allowed him to finance his personal fine art documentary work, including his most recent book project, Transcendent Spirit: The Children of Uganda. Recently, Menuez’ archive was acquired by Stanford University Library. He is currently working on a new book on Silicon Valley entitled Fearless Genius. His website is www.menuez.com
