Phil Mansfield: Intro to Photoshop for Photographers

Fridays, 10 am - 2 pm        November  5, 12, 19 

This workshop is the essential and exciting first step for anyone interested in jumping the digital divide and learning about the basics digital darkroom techniques. Through demonstrations and hands-on exercises over the course of these two days, you will be lead step-by-step through the basics of Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Lessons will cover a range of topics including selections, layers, image modes, tonal and color correction, paths, filters/special effects and file formats (i.e. JPEG, TIFF). In addition, you will receive an overview on scanning film negatives & prints, ink jet printing, workflow and the importance of color calibration technology.  All students will leave with a sound foundation, ready to move forward in the digital realm.

Fawn Potash & Danielle Correia: Advanced Open Studio: Emphasis on Photography & Encaustics

Sat.-Tues., November 6-9

Seeking to take things to the next level? CPW and R&F Handmade Paints are excited to offer this 5-day advanced workshop. This session is intended for artists who are experienced with photography and encaustic, but seek to take things to the next level.

Participants will work intensively within a small group of peers, enhancing their technical knowledge and benefiting from the guidance of two accomplished instructors. The first two days will be spent utilizing the traditional and digital darkroom facilities at CPW, with unlimited access to print, scan and prepare photographic works to be combined with the encaustic process. The following three days will be spent in the studio at R&F, with access to the complete range of encaustic paints and tools. This creative atmosphere will be the perfect place to bring your individual projects to fruition, while fueling exciting discussions, critiques and demonstrations.

Participants will have access to state- of-the-art photographic equipment including large-format printers, scanners and SLR cameras. Participants can choose to go on location if they are interested in photographing and printing a body of work. The workshop will include class critiques and discussion about projects so that participants can bounce ideas off of one another, helping them to find direction for their work.  Fawn Potash and Danielle Correia will be there as moderators, assisting participants with their projects, guiding them through the processes, and allowing for spontaneity and creative expression.

An application for admission into this workshop is required and due by August 31. It will be reviewed by CPW and R&F staff.  

Application Requirements:
two paragraph proposal including: project description, clarification of how you would utilize both CPW and R&F facilities, instructors, and other participants, as well as your expectations of the workshop.
5-10 digital images of work on disk (work does not have to correspond to the proposal)

All applicants will be notified via email by mid-September.

*The cost includes material use for up to five 20x24” digital prints, unlimited digital scans & use of the wet-darkroom at CPW; unlimited use of paints and equipment at R&F. There will be a materials fee for additional prints.

Dennis O'Clair: Intro to D-SLR Video for Photographers Saturday November 13

Video is the new photography. Today’s fast paced pop culture and web centered information and entertainment pipelines often demand informative and entertaining content in the form of moving imagery.

If you’re a photographer with some skill and experience in digital photography and workflow, then you already have many of the skills necessary to join the video revolution. Simplicity and adaptation will be the overall theme of this Intro to DSLR Video class. Through demonstrations and discussions, you will learn how to create and capture video with a DSLR camera. Technical aspects of video capture, including camera set up, frame rates, picture profiles and white balance, will be covered. Hands on demonstrations of metering, focusing and exposure techniques for working in live view (video) mode will take place. Audio will also be discussed. Videos made during the workshop will be used to demonstrate workflow and file management. Dennis O’Clair will show you that you don’t need a lot of special gear and/or new software to get started in video.

DENNIS O'CLAIR has spent over 25 years providing imagery for advertising, corporate and editorial clients around the world and producing stock photography and stock footage for Corbis, Cultura and Getty Images.  Since the introduction of the Canon 5DMkII, Dennis has thoroughly embraced the HD video capability of this camera and has concentrated on perfecting his video and film making skills.  He has a simple approach and a DIY attitude that is perfect for creating high quality video in a budget conscious environment.  Dennis is active in the education and activism in the photographic community.  Some of his affiliations have included: VP and treasurer of SAA (Stock Artists Alliance), member of PAG (Photographer’s Advisory Group) Getty Images, ASMP member, APA member, CPW member, CPW Salon member.
