hands-on intensive creative session for dedicated photographers who
have a developed body of portraiture and are ready to take their work to
the next level! Whether you are a professional or just beginning to break
into the professional arena, Platon, who consistently receives outstanding
praise from his students, will nurture your creative instincts and awaken

You
will share portfolios and Platon will present a slide talk to inspire and
energize the class. Platon, who moves gracefully between fine art and
commercial photography, will lead discussions on some of the important
issues pertaining to people pictures, with a focus on creative ins-and-outs,
problem solving, awakening the senses, staying positive, pressures
of the job, and how to succeed.
Platon will take you through a professional shoot and demonstrate
his lighting setup. In turn, each
student will have the opportunity to shoot one another using
Platon’s custom studio set-up. Working from both sides of the lens, you
will learn how to better empathize with your sitter and have time for
application of new techniques bringing vision to life.

Linda Connor: Direction
& Inspiration
|
Sat-Sun
June 6-77
|
|
Led
by a honored photographer and
educator, this two-day intensive vision
seminar is for photographers who are ready to realize creative
goals, expand influences, and recognize why and how the work they are
producing is simultaneously unique, but also a part of a long genealogy of
expression. Whether
you photograph landscapes, still lives, portraits, or creative fictions,
this kind of focused creative exploration is essential to personal growth,
even though we often don’t find the time for this in our day-to-day
routine. This is a unique opportunity
to restore and revitalize your artistic direction.
Combining portfolio reviews, an in-depth
look at historical and contemporary photography, group discussions,
and creative exercises, our
time together will be spent working as a cohesive group to create
a personal
map of influences,
heighten awareness
of what drives your work, and discover new directions to pursue. By
the end of the
weekend you will have a greater understanding of and confidence in
your own personal
aesthetic and vision. Photographers who attend should have a
developed body of work to share as well as new work in progress.
Linda
Connor has taught at the San
Francisco Art Institute for the past 35
years. The most consistent element in Connor’s work is the making
of photographs that are iconic and that honor her subject. Using tools
reminiscent of 19th century landscape
photography, Connor’s images reflect the poetry and mystery of place
and contemplate the relationship of the sacred to the natural world.
Connor’s work has been internationally exhibited at venues
including San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Center for Creative
Photography in Tucson, National Gallery of Art, Haines Gallery and Paul
Kopeikin Gallery. Her photographs
are published in seven monographs
including On
the Music
of the Spheres, Spiral Journey, and the
most recent Odyssey
by Chronicle
Books. She is the recipient of three National Endowment for the Arts
grants, as well as a Guggenheim Fellowship,
and her work is included in collections at the Art Institute of
Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, the George Eastman House, the Getty,
and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Getting the Best Results from the Canon Digital SLR
|
Sat-Sun
June 6-7
|
|
In
this two-day workshop you will learn from a pro how to produce the highest
quality images with a digital SLR camera. This class is the first step for
any photographer interested in learning about digital single lens reflex
cameras and the benefits of digital imaging! Ellison will demystify the
manuals and offer hands-on instruction on how to obtain the best results
from a digital camera. She will start from the beginning and cover the
basics of how to use a digital camera, including digital capture, white

and exposure. Participants will be provided with a Canon digital
SLR for class instruction, but if you have your own digital SLR you are
welcome to bring that for class use. You will shoot images and Ellison

Introduction to Fine Art Digital Printing
|
Thursdays
6-9pm
June 18, 25, July 2 & 9
|
|
Making
exhibition-quality digital prints takes time and expertise. This
class offers you the opportunity to work with a master printer who
has produced exhibition quality prints that have been shown throughout the
Art World. Over the course of four classes, we will examine the tools and
methods for making color fine-art prints with digital inkjet printers.
Using Adobe Photoshop CS4 you will learn to modify your images in a

and techniques.
We will examine a variety
of general
approaches to printing, utilize basic and advanced color management
techniques, compare papers, and
even compare digital processing with prints made in conventional
darkrooms. Students may work with images made on film (to be scanned), or
digitally captured. We will discuss not only the processes involved in
making prints–but we will explore what a fine print is …the
relationship of tone, hue, contrast –and
how these characteristics tend
to be affected by materials in the digital domain. There will an
additional optional trip to Woodstock Graphics Studio, which is located
just down the street from CPW.

dates to choose from:
Sat-Tues June 20-23 or
September 12-15
|
|
Co-hosted
with R&F Handmade Paints,
this four-day hands-on workshop
will provide you with the basic working knowledge to combine
photographic processes with the encaustic medium. Encaustic, an ancient
Greek wax-based medium, can
be used to give unusual dimension to
your work, provide new substance and body to a photograph, add translucent
layers, alter the illusion of space, and transform your imagery.
This interdisciplinary workshop will
combine presentations, step-by-step
instruction, and plenty of time to
experiment and make new work.
On
Days One and Two at the Center for Photography at Woodstock we will
explore creative ways to work with photography and encaustic and
see inspiring examples including the work of Joel Peter Witkin and Doug
& Mike Starn. Then we will roll up our sleeves and prepare our images,
experimenting with various photographic processes including toning,
coloring, cyanotypes, digital prints,
digital negatives, and a variety of
transfer techniques. On Days Three and Four at the encaustic studio
at R&F
Handmade Paints, we will learn about the many ways to incorporate
the photographic images with the
encaustic process. We will learn about the many different effects
including layering, optical effects, intensification of light and depth in
an image, and how to make imagery translucent. The class will also
cover archival techniques, methods of presentation, and basic safety.
This is a class about experimentation:
leave your old ideas behind and open the doors to new possibilities
and
processes! To learn more about the encaustic process please visit
the R&F website www.rfpaints.com

special medium unto itself with a long pedigree and particular
