Phillip Toledano: Turning Your Ideas into Images Sat-Sun, October 4-5

Do you find it a challenge turning your ideas into a reality?  In his first workshop at CPW, photographer and former art director Phillip Toledano will help you through the process of making conceptually driven images. He will discuss the varying degrees of developing and communicating a concept as well as how ideas work in the editorial realm as well as in the world of fine art. This is a workshop dedicated to those photographers who are interested in turning their ideas into images. This is not a technical class, but a cognitive one. What will be refined is not your lighting skills, but rather your conceptual, and evaluative skills.

Starting with a slide-show showcasing some of Toledano’s own work as well as work of other artists working conceptually, the class will follow that with an in-depth portfolio review. Together you will discuss concepts that class-members are working on, and help to bring them to the next level. We will explore the questions: what is needed to make the idea happen? Is the image conveying your ideas? And of course, have we seen it before? Lessons learned will be invaluable and applicable in both editorial and the fine art world.

PHILLIP TOLEDANO is an NYC based photographer. Born in London, he had no formal photography training. He was an art director in advertising for about ten years, an experience which ultimately made him the photographer he is today-that is, a concept based. Since becoming a photographer six years ago, he has shot for a wide range of magazines, including The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, GQ, Vanity Fair, Wallpaper, and Interview.  His work has been shown internationally. His first book BANKRUPT was published by Twin Palms in 2005 and his second book, PHONESEX, (Twin Palms) with be published in 2008. Phillip Toledano is represented by Art Department in New York. For more information, visit www.mrtoledano.com
