Craig J.
Barber: Experimental Pinhole Photography
|
Sat-Sun May 31-
June 1
|
|
In
this two-day hands-on workshop you will learn to make your own pinhole
cameras and depart from the world of hi-tech equipment to one of
simplicity and liberation. Due to its infinite depth of field, the pinhole
camera has unique abilities to redefine the world, whether working in
extreme close up or playing with depth perception. In addition, its slight
soft focus creates a dreamlike quality that is capable of rendering
expressive images with an ethereal effect. It is also the perfect match
for those interested in alternative processes, as you begin with an
enlarged negative from the start!
We
will begin our weekend with a historical and contemporary overview of
pinhole photography that includes a variety of formats you may choose to
employ in your own explorations. Each participant will construct a
personal camera suited to your individual aesthetic requirements. Daily
field trips will include practical demonstrations and working time to
learn how to gauge exposure, framing the subject, and how to see with your
new camera. You will learn about the usage of single and multiple pinhole
cameras including diptychs and triptychs, using both polaroid film and
paper negatives, as well as the conversion of existing cameras and/or
“found” containers into pinhole cameras. This will be a fun and
creatively inspiring workshop with emphasis on photographing and
experimentation, geared toward both experienced and inexperienced pinhole
photographers!
CRAIG J. BARBER
is a photographer who travels and works exclusively with the pinhole
format and focuses of the cultural landscape. During the past 10 years he
has focused his camera on Viet Nam, Havana, Cuba and the Catskill region
of New York State. In each, documenting a culture in rapid transition and
fading from memory. His work has been exhibited throughout the United
States, Europe and Latin America and is represented in several prominent
museum and private collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston;
the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Brooklyn Art Museum; the
George Eastman House, Rochester, NY; and Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes,
Buenos Aires, among others. He has received several grants including the
Seattle Arts Comission, the Polaroid Corporation and the New York
Foundation for the Arts. In 2006 Umbrage Editions published his book, Ghosts

Getting the Best Results from the Canon Digital SLR
|
Sat-Sun
June 7-8
|
|
In this two-day workshop you will learn from a pro
how to produce the highest quality images with a digital SLR camera. This
class is the first step for any photographer interested in learning about
digital single lens reflex cameras and the benefits of digital imaging —
no previous digital experience is necessary! Ellison will demystify the
manuals and offer hands-on instruction on how to obtain the best results
from a digital camera. She will start from the beginning and cover the
basics of how to use a digital camera, including digital capture, white
balance, JPEG vs. RAW files, and color space, in addition to composition
and exposure. Participants will be provided with a Canon digital SLR for
class instruction, but if you have your own digital SLR you are welcome to
bring that for class use. You will shoot images and Ellison will show
basic Photoshop steps to prepare images for printing, including unsharp
masks, levels, and resizing. All will leave with new inkjet prints and a
sound foundation to move forward in the digital realm. Participants should
have a basic photography foundation and know how to use a standard film
based SLR, but no prior digital experience is required.

Josephine
Sacabo: Images of the Psyche: Seeing the Unseen
|
Sat-Sun
June 14-15
|
|
“Invisible
connection is stronger than visible. To arrive at the basic structure of
things we must go into their darkness.” –
Heraclitus
In this two-day, hands-on
workshop you will explore how to photograph things not as you “see”
them but rather as you might have “dreamt” them. We dream in images
– they are at the most basic level of our true psychic reality. Our
dreams are the metaphorical pictures of our individual realities. Through
them we can forge a deeper connection between the world and ourselves. By
uniting dream and reality, we can make an art that will resonate and in
the process learn something about our own spirit. Working from this
personal and intuitive place will be the focus of our two days together.
We will begin by
talking about a personal dream or imagined images and explore the
qualities in them we may want to make into photographs. We will share and
review portfolios, and Josephine will show you her latest work dealing
with these themes and expressing what was revealed to her after the fact
by the images themselves. We will then go out to photograph. Whether you
choose to make images of the landscape, models, objects you’ve brought
from home, or found items on location… Josephine will be there to help
with techniques that can yield the results you envision. After our shoots
we will share some of the work made and discuss what is communicated by it
to one another. This class is open to all photographers working in any genre with any
format.
JOSEPHINE SACABO, a
native of Laredo, Texas, lives and works in New Orleans, LA. Prior to
settling in New Orleans, Sacabo lived and worked extensively in France and
England.
She uses poetry as the genesis of her work and it is poets she
lists as her most important influences – among them – Rainer Maria
Rilke and Juan Rulfo. Her books include Une
Femme Habitee, published by Editions Marval in Paris, Pedro
Páramo, illustrated with Sacabos’ photographs, and 21st – The Fine
Journal of Contemporary Photography. Sacabo’s work is represented in
NYC by John Stevenson Gallery, in New Orleans by A Gallery for Fine
Photography and has been exhibited in Madrid, Buenos Aires, Paris, Los
Angeles, Guatemala City, London, Mexico City, New York, New Orleans, and
is included in the collections at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the New
Orleans Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern
Art, the Whitney Museum, Wittcliff Collection, Museum of Fine Arts in
Boston, and the George Eastman House. This is Josephine’s third workshop
with CPW, she has also taught at Recontres International in Arles, France
and at the Palm Beach Photographic Center. To learn more about Josephine,
visit www.josephinesacabo.com.
Participants should bring:
things that reappear in your dreams or that haunt you as items to
photograph, (a model will also be available), your favorite camera and
film/memory cards, a portfolio of 10-20 prints, and found images that
compel you.

Joan
Barker: Introduction to Photography
|
Sat-Sun,
June 16-17
|
|
Just
getting started? Want to begin again after a long time? Ready to go beyond
snapshots? In this two-day, hands-on individualized workshop – limited
to just six participants - you
will learn the basic foundations of photography and how to make a
successful picture and print within a supportive environment.
An energetic and encouraging educator and photographer, Joan Barker will
begin by helping you understand and feel comfortable with your camera. You
will see inspiring examples of successful photographs and learn about the
elements that help make a good picture including subject matter, light,
texture, pattern and mood. Joan
will also conduct lessons on aperture, shutter speed, film types,
exposure, depth of field and lighting. We will explore the technical and
aesthetic possibilities of picture taking while on a photographic
fieldtrip. Working with camera in hand, your view and understanding of the
people, places and objects around you will be enhanced.
What begins this weekend may lead
to a new career and/or almost certainly a life passion!
No previous experience necessary. To best understand the basic
foundations of how photography and light works, this class will employ the
use of 35mm SLR cameras and silver film, but much of what you learn can
later be applied to digital applications as well. For those with digital
background this class will allow you to better understand the photographic
principals relative to both.

Trager: Publishing a Photographic Book
|
Sat-Sun
June 21-22
|
|
In this workshop you will find out
how to produce a book of your own photographs. You will learn how to
develop a book idea, create a dummy, and how to locate editors, designers,
and a publisher who will have the most interest in your work. We will also
explore the best markets for your book. Photographers who already have
ideas for books should bring their concepts to the class and those who may
still be unsure will discover new ideas here.
Working together as a cohesive group,
with each member contributing ideas, we will discuss your photographs,
edit your images, explore sequencing possibilities, review
editing and cropping images digitally, and
arrive at a good "flow" for your book – (all essential tools
that you will be able to apply to other bodies of work at home). Your
concept will be dialogued in detail, with input as to the best
possibilities for text writers. This class is for photographers who have
spent enough time and thought to have a mature and developed portfolio of
work. We will function as a closely-knit group, and move your project
ahead.
