Keith Carter: Re-Inventing the World

Sat-Sun, June 2-3

This is a workshop designed to help you discover and strengthen your own original vision and to broaden the way you think about photography. Its purpose is to help serious amateur or professional photographers explore the narrative, aesthetic, and emotional aspects of image making. Our goal will be to develop or refine a sense of personal style and to make work that is more passionate and fulfilling.

Emphasizing simplicity, use of natural light, practical demonstrations, field trips, portfolio reviews, and discussions centering on the work of both historically significant and little known photographers, Carter will help you clarify your views on producing work and balancing the various aspects of a busy life. In addition, he will discuss darkroom technique and expressive printmaking, and how to develop projects, exhibitions, and enter the publishing world. Come with a sense of humor and a sense of purpose. This class is open to all camera formats, black-and-white and/or color.

KEITH CARTER is by far one of the most inspiring and illuminating artists we have ever had the honor of working with! Called a "poet of the ordinary" by the Los Angeles Times, Carter’s enigmatic photographs have been widely exhibited in Europe, the US, and Latin America. An internationally recognized photographer and educator, he holds the endowed Walles Chair of Art at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. Eight monographs of his photographs have been published including From Uncertain to Blue 1988, The Blue Man 1990, Mojo 1992, Heaven of Animals 1995, Bones 1996, and the mid-career survey Keith Carter Photographs - Twenty Five Years 1997. Holding Venus and Ezekiel’s Horse were both published in 2000. His images are included in numerous collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, George Eastman House, and Museum of Fine Arts of Houston. He is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Regional Survey grants and the Lange-Taylor prize from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.  Sat-Sun, June 9-10

In this two-day, hands-on seminar, Lauren Piperno, a commercial photographer with over 30 years of field experience, will guide you through the ins-and-outs of how to use lighting in the studio and on location, as well as how to choose the correct lighting system for your needs. Open to those shooting either film or digital, color or black-&-white, this class is designed for all levels of photographers new to lighting or those in need of a refresher. Combining presentations on equipment and technique with hands-on shooting experience, this class will concentrate on how to evaluate and better use light for in-studio head shots and portraiture, table top still lives (including items for ebay), and any on location situations you might encounter.

Understanding the concepts of light and the characteristics of a given subject are fundamental to adding dimension, balance, and artistry to your photographs. Piperno will offer her techniques and strategies that demystify equipment and gadgets to help your day-to-day assignments progress with ease and innovation. Judi Esmond: Introduction to Photography

 Sat-Sun, June 16-17

Just getting started? Want to begin again after a long time? Ready to move beyond snapshots? In this two-day, hands-on individualized workshop - limited to just six participants - you will learn the basic foundations of photography and how to make a successful picture within a highly supportive environment.

Judi Esmond, an energetic and encouraging educator, will begin by helping you understand and feel comfortable with your camera. You will see inspiring examples of successful photographs and learn about the elements that make a good picture including subject matter, composition, light, pattern, texture, and mood. The workshop will set out on a field trip to make pictures and you will learn first hand how to choose the right film and the basic rules of exposure, depth of field, aperture, shutter speed, and lighting. What begins this weekend may lead to a new career and/or almost certainly a life passion! No previous photographic experience necessary. To best understand the basic foundations of how photography and light works, this class will employ the use of 35mm SLR cameras and silver film, but much of what you learn can later be applied to digital applications as well. For those with digital background this class will allow you to better understand the photographic principals relative to both.

JUDI ESMOND works as the museum educator at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art in New Paltz, NY and an art instructor at the New Paltz High School. She has served as CPW’s education and outreach coordinator and taught photography in the Hudson Valley with the Mill Street Loft, Children's Home of Kingston, Rockland County Community College , the Children's Annex, Onteora High School, Woodstock Day School, and Poughkeepsie Day School. In addition to her teaching talents, Judi is an independent freelance photographer, custom printer, and has worked as a studio assistant in NYC with photographers Jan Groover and Michael O'Neil. In her personal photography, Esmond pushes limits and employs both experimental and traditional methods. Sat- Tues, June 23-26 or September 22-25

Co-hosted with R&F Handmade Paints, this four-day, hands-on workshop will provide you with the basic working knowledge to combine photographic processes with the encaustic medium. This interdisciplinary workshop will combine presentations, step-by-step instruction, and plenty of time to experiment & make new work.

On days one and two at the Center for Photography at Woodstock we will explore creative ways to work with photography and encaustic and see inspiring examples including the work of Joel Peter Witkin and Doug & Mike Starn. Then we will roll up our sleeves and prepare our images, experimenting with various photographic processes including toning, coloring, cyanotypes, digital prints, digital negatives, and a variety of transfer techniques. On days three and four at the encaustic studio at R&F Handmade Paints, we will learn about the many ways to incorporate the photographic images with the encaustic process. We will learn about the many different effects including layering, optical effects, intensification of light and depth in an image, and how to make imagery translucent. The class will also cover archival techniques, methods of presentation, and basic safety. George Holz:
A Body of Work

Sat-Sun,
June 30 - July 1

Unexpected light and form is why George Holz's photographs are celebrated worldwide. Join us for this two-day workshop and learn from a renowned photographer and teacher. This class will re-ignite your imagination, help you go beyond the predictable, and address creative and fresh approaches to the human figure from both modern and classical art.

Holz will provide his insight during a thoughtful sharing of work, and then we'll set out to make new pictures. You'll expand your creative vision beyond the ordinary and experiment with non-conventional thought processes and techniques. Photographing with male and female models on location with both indoor and outdoor opportunities for shooting, Holz will reveal his signature lighting and camera techniques and discuss how to work with models and the importance of a respectful and professional working relationship. As a mentor Holz’s talent lays in his graceful ability to help participants with individual problem solving, vision, and hopes.

GEORGE HOLZ has over twenty years experience and is considered one of the most respected, prolific, and versatile players in the industry. A Grammy Award winning photographer, Holz's celebrity portraiture has cast a wide net, capturing such personalities as Jack Nicholson, Kirsten Dunst, President Clinton, Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Brad Pitt. Holz also has an impressive presence in the motion picture industry, where he has shot posters for blockbusters including The Generals Daughter, Face Off, and Along Came a Spider. Contrasting elements are playfully and beautifully visible in Holz's fine art work, which reveals the interplay of the human form with landscape and object. In his compelling, often ethereal images of nudes, Holz celebrates the body and compares it to bone and metal, natural and man-made worlds. His willingness to push limits is one he credits to an influential early apprenticeship with the late Helmut Newton. The clarity of this vision has caught the attention of diverse advertising agencies, including a Clio Award-winning series for the International Gold Corporation, as well as work for DeBeers Diamonds, among many. His work can be found in Staley-Wise Gallery in NYC and Fahey/Klein Gallery in Los Angeles, as well as many other prominent galleries and museums across the country. Holz travels frequently between his Greenwich Village studio and mountain home in upstate NY, where he lives with his wife and son. His website is www.georgeholz.com.
