Keith
Carter: Re-Inventing the World
|
Sat-Sun,
June 2-3
|
|
This
is a workshop designed to help you discover and strengthen your own
original vision and to broaden the way you think about photography. Its
purpose is to help serious amateur or professional photographers explore
the narrative, aesthetic, and emotional aspects of image making. Our goal
will be to develop or refine a sense of personal style and to make work
that is more passionate and fulfilling.
Emphasizing simplicity, use of natural light, practical
demonstrations, field trips, portfolio reviews, and discussions centering
on the work of both historically significant and little known
photographers, Carter will help you clarify your views on producing work
and balancing the various aspects of a busy life. In addition, he will
discuss darkroom technique and expressive printmaking, and how to develop
projects, exhibitions, and enter the publishing world. Come with a sense
of humor and a sense of purpose. This class is open to all camera
formats, black-and-white and/or color.
KEITH CARTER is
by far one of the most inspiring and illuminating artists we have ever had
the honor of working with! Called a "poet of the ordinary"
by the Los Angeles Times,
Carter’s enigmatic photographs have been widely exhibited in
Europe, the
US, and
Latin America. An internationally
recognized photographer and educator, he holds the endowed Walles Chair of
Art at
Lamar
University
in Beaumont, Texas. Eight monographs of his
photographs have been published including From
Uncertain to Blue 1988, The Blue
Man 1990, Mojo 1992, Heaven of Animals 1995, Bones
1996, and the mid-career survey Keith
Carter Photographs - Twenty Five Years 1997. Holding Venus and Ezekiel’s
Horse were both published in 2000. His images are included in numerous
collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, San Francisco Museum
of Modern Art, George Eastman House, and Museum of Fine Arts of Houston.
He is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Regional Survey
grants and the Lange-Taylor prize from the Center for Documentary Studies
at
Duke
University. In 1998 he received
Lamar
University's highest teaching
honor, the University Professor Award and was named the Lamar University

Kelton: The Fine Art of Black-&-White Printing
|
Sat
- Sun,
June 8-10
|
|
Back by ever popular demand! This in-depth and fun workshop
dedicated to the fine art of black-and-white printing is for committed
photographers looking to take your printing techniques to the next level.
Through discussions centered on your work, this three day hands-on
darkroom intensive is designed to strengthen your understanding of
materials, process, and the medium. One of our most popular events,
previous participants say: “Kelton is a master developer with
patience and great teaching skills”, “top notch instruction and
facilities”, “Kelton’s deep understanding of the topic and natural
teaching ability is stunning – he was perfect for all levels”, and
“…this [class] was just what I needed.”
Working in a fully equipped darkroom, with an enlarger for
each participant, you will learn about different papers, film types and
their characteristics, how paper and film can relate to different
developers and developing technique, and how to make your prints archival.
Through examination of the many combinations of equipment, paper, and
developers, you will learn how to combine practical issues and innovative
techniques to print any negative creatively, successfully, and with
individual style. Kelton will also demonstrate split-filter printing,
different toning methods including selenium, sepia, gold, selective
bleaching, and intensification to produce the final print.
CHUCK KELTON,
the crème de la crème of printers, is owner of Kelton Labs in
NYC. For the last two decades Kelton has worked as a master printer for
exhibitions and advertising campaigns for leading photographers worldwide.
Kelton splits his times between both fine art and commercial
printing, his client list includes the top advertising agencies and major
magazines--Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan,
and some of the most renowned artists --Lillian Bassman, Danny Lyon, Helen
Levitt, Zeke Berman—just to give a sample. When not in the darkroom,
Kelton teaches in the graduate program at the
International
Center
for Photography as well
as in workshops throughout the country. His own photographs have been exhibited widely and are held in the
collections of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France.
