Mary Ellen Mark: The World Observed

Sat-Sun, August 4-5

We are honored to present a very special two-day workshop with Mary Ellen Mark, one of the most renowned women in the international field, a gifted photographer, and a captivating teacher. With Mark you will explore contemporary trends in personal documentary photography and photojournalism. You will investigate human relationships, people’s desires, aspirations, and learn how to interpret social situations in many aspects of urban and rural cultures through photography.

In class we will explore the work of Mary Ellen Mark and fellow students from around the world. Following an in-depth portfolio review you will be given a specific assignment. Topics come from your own interests and curiosity, with direction and encouragement from Mary Ellen. Working together, you will have the opportunity to grow and take risks within an understanding and supportive peer group. Throughout the weekend Mark will review your progress and discuss your career, techniques, approaches, and the themes within your work.

Connie Imboden: Using the Nude to See the World in a New Way

Sat-Sun, August 11-12

Artists have always used the nude to explore the surreal and the natural, as well as our spiritual and psychological lives. In this workshop you will be encouraged to look at the human form in a way that is new to you and explore the figure for its beauty, complexity, and simplicity. Whether you regularly photograph the nude, are new to the figure, or feel stuck and just need a push getting back into photography, this class, designed to help you see intuitively will deliver a burst of energy, new methods, direction, and clarity.

During our time together, everyone’s work will be reviewed to help assess strengths as well as areas that might need attention. Specific assignments will be given each day and afternoons will be spent photographing on-location with both male and female models in locations that will encourage interesting visual interactions. Whether you shoot film or digital, each participant will have the opportunity to shoot digital images the first day for in class feedback. Throughout the rest of the shoots participants are welcome to shoot either film or digital. Process will be emphasized over product and playfulness will be encouraged. Our mistakes contain valuable information, and in this workshop we will look at them without judgment, but rather as guides to help tell us where to go. The only prerequisite for this class is that you should be comfortable working with your camera.

CONNIE IMBODEN’s photographs have been exhibited extensively at galleries and museums in England, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, Spain, Costa Rica, Panama, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and the US. Her work is represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in NY, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of American Art in Washington DC, the Corcoran Museum in Washington DC, and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. Her first book of images, Out of Darkness, won the Silver Medal in Switzerland’s Schonste Bucher Aus Aller Welt (Most Beautiful Book in the World) Award. Imboden’s work has also been featured in Aperture, American Photo, Camera and Darkroom, Photo Metro, Photo Review, Black and White, View Camera, and Zoom Magazine. Imboden currently teaches photography at the Maryland Institute, and has lead workshops across the US, France, and the Czech Republic. To learn more visit www.connieimboden.com

Eikoh Hosoe:
Nude Study In the Open Air

Sat-Sun, Aug. 25-26

"To me photography can be simultaneously both a record and a 'mirror' or 'window' of self-expression.” - Eikoh Hosoe

CPW is most honored to present a very special weekend with Mr. Eikoh Hosoe, an artist, teacher, ambassador, widely considered to be one of the most influential and important image-makers of our time! This is a rare opportunity to work under the graceful and creative guidance of Eikoh Hosoe and to explore the “cosmos in the human body, beyond sex and race.”

Combining portfolio review, critique, and afternoon field shooting sessions, in this workshop you will photograph the figure in its pure form, paying attention to texture, skin, shape, and the form of the body. Mr. Hosoe will share his vision – one that has made him world renowned - and discuss his creative motivations and aesthetic philosophy. He will demonstrate how he works with models, how to approach the subject, and he’ll give individual assignments photographing male and female models in inspiring locations and situations. At the end of our session we will share our work and have a party! While this is bound to be an intensive creative weekend, it will be a highly rewarding learning experience guided by a true master of photography!

EIKOH HOSOE is undoubtedly one of the most important and respected photographers in the history of the medium. Born in Japan in 1933, he decided to become a photographer at age 18. Since then Mr. Hosoe has been established himself as an internationally acclaimed photographer and professor. Mr. Hosoe has consistently pursued personal original directions in his work, focusing on the dialogue between men and women, life and death, the supernatural, theatre, and the nude and the landscape. His photographs have been recognized in major exhibitions spanning Asia, Australia, Europe, and the US, at venues including the Yokohama Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institute, the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House, the Museum of Modern Art, the International Center for Photography, and The Ikeda Museum of 20th Century Art. The Howard Greenberg Gallery has long represented his work in NYC. The many books of his work include Man and Woman, A Place Called Hiroshima, Ba-ra-kei: Ordeal by Roses, Eikoh Hosoe: Aperture Masters of Photography, Embrace, Butterfly Dream, and recently re-released by Aperture, Kamaitachi. Hosoe has been the director of the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (Kiyosato, Yamanashi), since it’s opening in 1995. He has lead workshops in Japan and abroad. Alex Webb & Rebecca Norris Webb:
In the Street / Personal Photojournalism

Sat-Sun, Aug. 25-26

This two-day hands-on workshop is about photographing in the street: using your camera to explore the world around you in a direct and spontaneous way. Above all, it is about seeing, emphasizing the photojournalistic and documentary traditions, and developing your own unique vision.

A workshop for amateurs and professionals alike, the weekend will begin with careful reviews of your work that will lead to assignments for afternoon shooting. Alex and Rebecca, a dynamic and gifted team, will engage you in discussions about how you can be spontaneous and intuitive - the photographic responses essential to a good picture - and how to build a body of work that represents your stance or attitude toward the world. In group critiques we will explore the relationship between images from sequencing and the interaction of photographs to the emotional implications of color and pragmatic limitations. This workshop will set you on course to creating a strong and meaningful body of work.

ALEX WEBB, a member of Magnum Photos since 1976, has published six books including Hot Light/Half Made Worlds, Under a Grudging Sun, and Crossings: Photographs from the U.S. Mexican Border.  His seventh book, Istanbul: City of a Hundred Names, will be published this spring by Aperture. He has worked for many major publications including National Geographic, Life, The New York Times Magazine, GEO, and is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Hasselblad Foundation Grant, and the Leica Medal of Excellence. Webb’s work is represented by Hasted-Hunt Gallery in NYC and has been exhibited widely in the US and Europe in museums such as the International Center of Photography, the High Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego

REBECCA NORRIS WEBB
, originally a poet and journalist, had her first NYC solo exhibition at Ricco/Maresca Gallery in 2006, the same year her first book, The Glass Between Us, was published.
