Welcoming photographers at every level, this
four-day, hands-on workshop will provide photographers with a basic
working knowledge of the encaustic medium and explore the many exciting
possibilities of combining encaustics with photography. Encaustics, an
ancient Greek wax-based medium, can be used to give unusual dimension to

examples including the work of Joel Peter Witkin and Doug and Mike Starn.
Then it’s hands on play as we roll up our sleeves and prepare our
imagery, creatively experimenting with various processes including toning,
coloring, blue printing, Xeroxes, digital prints, and fabric transfers. In
the encaustic studio each participant will work from their own personal
work station, while Cynthia and Fawn lead you step by step through the
encaustic process and reveals the many different effects you can create
including layering, optical effects, intensification of light and depth in
your image, and how to make imagery translucent. We’ll also cover
archival techniques, methods of presentation, and basic safety. Each
participant will have a generous supply of materials and plenty of time to
-experiment! FAWN POTASH is a photographic
artist, educator, and curator whose work has been exhibited and collected
