Robert Glenn Ketchum: The Radiance of Light  Sat-Sun, September 4-5
We are honored to offer you the opportunity to spend two days with Robert Glenn Ketchum, the foremost environmental photographer, to photograph the crisp light and majesty of the Catskill Mountains . This class focuses on learning to see and will provide you with a more complete understanding of light. Participants will begin to appreciate the way their film and/or camera "sees" and records a subject, and how that is very different from what they see with their eyes. Mastery of color or tone and composition are impossible without fully grasping the effect of light on a given subject.

This class will combine lectures, discussions, work critiques, and field trips in the mountains and surrounding areas to provide practical applications of ideas with emphasis on precise exposure control and adjusting to diverse available conditions. A recurring theme in the lectures will be simple exercises to overcome the technology of the camera as an obstacle to the creative process, and Robert will spend some time discussing field preparedness so you will feel more comfortable with your equipment. All levels of students are welcome, as are all camera formats, and processes - from color and black-and-white to digital to non-traditional image making.

ROBERT GLENN KETCHUM’s work is collected by major museums and since 1968 has been featured in more than 500 shows worldwide. This spring, Aperture released a spectacular, large format, 2-book set of Ketchum’s newest work, Rivers of Life: Southwest Alaska, The Last Great Salmon Fishery and Wood Tikchik: Alaska ’s Largest State Park. These companion publications address fisheries' management and habitat fragmentation in a relatively pristine Alaskan environment now threatened with oil development. In 2003, Ketchum was given the Lifetime Achievement Award in Photography and Conservation by Aperture Foundation, and in 2001 he was named Outstanding Photographer of the Year by the North American Nature Photographers Association. These recognitions, and many others, are acknowledgement that Ketchum is one of the most successful artists/conservation activists in American history, but nothing makes that more clear than being named by Audubon magazine as one of the 100 people "who shaped the environmental movement in the 20th century." Others on that list include such legendary individuals as John Muir, Rachael Carson, and David Brower. Pertinent to this workshop, in Outside magazine’s recent national survey of workshops and instructors, they found that Robert was widely considered one of the two finest photography teachers in the country!

Participants should bring: ten prints or slides (digital format users should bring their laptops),  camera, and plenty of your favorite film.
Class limit: 15
Tuition: CPW members $275/ non-members $295

Richard Edelman:  Introduction to the Digital Darkroom Sat- Sun, September 11- 12
Ready to explore the digital realm? This two-day workshop will introduce you to the process of making digital prints and setting up a digital darkroom. The purpose is to help you strengthen your personal vision via new, electronic printmaking techniques. Held at Edelman’s digital darkroom at the Woodstock Graphics Studio, you will discuss and work with several processes designed to create archival fine art prints in black-and-white and color, utilizing only cost efficient digital processes.

Explore how the digital darkroom allows you to print in a manner that goes beyond the conventional darkroom! You will discover a refined level of control over contrast, tonality, burning, and dodging. You will work with an Epson printer, Imacon 848 scanner, and Apple computers. We begin with high end negative scanning, followed by a brief overview of Adobe Photoshop and digital refinement of your images, and the creation of an archival black-and-white or color print, using the newest printing technology; Epson 7-color pigmented Ultachrome-inks and archival papers. Adobe experience is helpful but not necessary.

RICHARD EDELMAN, a photographer and graphic artist, has work in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Canadian Centre for Architecture, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Polaroid International Collection, Bibliothéque Nationale, and Everson Museum of Art. He holds an MFA in photography from Pratt Institute and a BFA in photography from Rochester Institute of Technology. The photographer has received fellowships from the Creative Artists Public Service Program (CAPS), and CPW Photographer’s Fund Fellowship in 1985 and 2002. He has been a member of the faculty at the New School, the School of Visual Arts, and the International Center for Photography, all in NYC.

Participants should bring: two negatives or transparencies (must be 35mm, 4x5", 6x6 cm, or 6x7 cm), in either b&w or color (expect to work on only one), any existing prints - digital or conventional of these negatives will also be helpful.

Sam Abell: The Next Step Sat-Sun, September 18-19
Are you ready to take the next photographic step, personally and professionally? Growth is essential to both a well-made career and a well-lived life. At your requests and the rave reviews: encouraging...life changing? heartwarming... an excellent teacher who cares and listens... it is an honor to welcome Sam Abell for another amazing workshop here in Woodstock . One of our most popular events, this is a weekend workshop for photographers who want to move from where they are - professionally and artistically - to the next, advanced phase. Participants in this workshop should have enough of an established path in photography that they can share with others - through their pictures and words - the road they have traveled so far, and their dreams and future destinations.

Class assignments will be given to sharpen vision and photographic seeing, but emphasis will be placed on existing work. There will be sessions to analyze and critique work and to define personal and professional goals. And then, once defined, you will explore ways and means of reaching your goals. In addition to examining our lives and careers as photographers, the class is aimed at understanding what we are doing (and why), and how to make the next step.

SAM ABELL is a dedicated and insightful teacher, an expressive artist, and a sensitive photographer. In 1969, he began working as a photographer for National Geographic and has since covered a great variety of editorial assignments ranging from the wilderness to cultural events, Britain ’s Hedgerows to Northwest Australia , and Ireland to Venice . Sam’s images retraced the steps of cowboy artist Charles Russell in the 1987 book titled C.M. Russell’s West.  Additional fascinating projects included those on the Life of Winslow Homer and a book about explorers Lewis and Clark. His most recent story for National Geographic covered the Japanese Imperial Palace and he is currently working on a conservation book on the Amazon! His monographs include the mid-career retrospective, Stay This Moment, and most recently Sam Abell: The Photographic Life. In addition to Sam’s extensive publications, his work has been exhibited worldwide at venues including the International Center for Photography in NYC. A treasured artist and teacher, Abell has lead workshops and lectured nationwide.

Participants should bring: a portfolio of 10-20 images, proofs, slides, work prints, and/or work-in-progress that you would like to discuss.

Ralph Gibson: The Nude As Metaphor Sat-Sun, September 25-26
The human figure has been a celebrated subject matter since the pre-historic Willendorf Venus. To this end, eyes of the artist will forever consider the nude as a study that will eternally be explored. I believe that the photographer who understands how to photograph both the human form and architecture is fully equipped to photograph all other subject matter.

This two-day hands on workshop will deal with posing, lighting, and composing the figure. The use of focal lengths will be covered as a means of understanding perspective and proportion. The point of this workshop is to create an effective working method for photographing the figure. There will be a full critique of participants? portfolios as well as an evaluation of some of the work made during the weekend.

RALPH GIBSON is considered by some to be one of the most important artists in our century to photograph the nude. A NYC resident, he was born in Los Angeles, California and began his study of photography with the US Navy in the 1950s. He undertook formal training at the San Francisco Art Institute and worked as an assistant to Robert Frank and Dorothea Lange. Today, Gibson has had more than 150 one-person exhibitions worldwide - a partial list includes those in NYC at the Whitney Museum of American Art, International Center for Photography, Howard Greenberg Gallery, the Photographers Gallery in London, the Weston Gallery in Carmel, and the Centre George’s Pompidou in Paris. Ralph is a two time National Endowment for Arts Fellow, has been awarded the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, an Eastman Kodak Grant, The Leica Medal of Excellence, and two honorary doctorates in Fine Art from Ohio Wesleyan University and University of Maryland. He has published over two dozen books, including Overtones, The Spirit of Burgundy, Tropical Drift, and Women.

Participants should bring: a portfolio of 10 - 20 prints, camera, and plenty of your favorite film.
