Lauren Piperno: A Place In Time - Working Public Events  Sun, June 27
Unsure of the right strategy for photographing that big and important event? Since the inception of the camera, one of the greatest challenges for the photographer is developing the instinct for knowing "where" and "when" to click the shutter. Whether one is at a private function or public gathering, the concerns are all the same: the photographer must develop a sixth sense for knowing the precise moment to react. In this one-day workshop, for both the novice and the experienced photographer, you'll learn about the technical and conceptual tools needed to capture the moment with grace and style!

We'll begin with a series of exercises to help better develop your instinctual insights for high-speed activity. Slide presentations will provide inspiration and you'll learn first hand about the necessary practical information including: equipment needs, how flash units can be used, and being prepared - how to obtain press passes, model releases, and more. In the evening we'll photograph the festivities, performances, and visitors at the annual Fourth of July celebration in Kingston's historical Rondout region with Ms. Piperno on hand to guide. Our day ends with a spectacular firework display at 9:30!

LAUREN PIPERNO is a fine art/freelance photographer and educator. Her photographic explorations have included the twilight worlds of servicemen with their USO escorts, male strippers and their female audiences, new-wave burlesque performers, Coney Island's sideshow entertainers, and ballroom dancers. Ms. Piperno is the co-author and featured photographer of Masked Culture: The Greenwich Village Halloween Parade and her images have been featured in  Photo District News, American Photography, Newsweek, Smithsonian, and the Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine. Piperno's work is in collections at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the International Museum of Photography/Eastman House in Rochester, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. Lauren is the recipient of the American-Scandinavian Foundation Fellowship and Hasselblad's 50th Anniversary World Tour Award. Lauren has lead workshops nationwide!

Note: this class meets at 12:30 (have some lunch before you come) and runs through the evening with a break for dinner!

Participants should bring: camera, plenty of your favorite film, flash units, fresh batteries, optional flash accessories if you have them (diffusion materials, gels, off camera cables), and an example of your favorite published/exhibited photograph (via book, Xerox, or magazine) to share with class.
Class limit: 15
