Jeff Jacobson: You Are Here - Personal Documentary Sat-Sun, August 21 - 22
Where do you stand? When do you press the shutter? Of these two questions, which permeate photography, the second is easier. You either pressed at the right moment or not, you know as soon as you see the image! The first question - where do you stand - is far more complex. Do you stand six inches from the subject or six feet? Do you stand, bend, or kneel? Where do you stand politically, psychologically, and spiritually? What role do you want photography to play in your life? Which pictures are truly yours and how do you learn to recognize them in the editing process?

In this two-day hands on class for creative documentary photographers, we will encourage one another to answer these and other questions through a combination of shooting assignments, portfolio review, editing critiques, and class discussions. In short our focus this weekend will be on refining your own photographic process and goals. This class is for serious photographers who are currently working on or are between projects!

JEFF JACOBSON holds degrees from the University of Oklahoma and Georgetown University Law Center . While working as a civil rights lawyer in the American South in the early 1970s Jacobson began photographing in southern jails and rural areas. After completing a workshop at Apeiron with Charles Harbutt, Jacobson left his law practice to devote his full energies to photography. A former Magnum photographer and founder of Archive Pictures, Jacobson regularly photographs for New York Times Magazine, Fortune, Geo, Life, and many others. His work has been exhibited and/or collected by the Whitney Museum of Art in NYC, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the George Eastman House in Rochester, and the Museo Rufino Tamayo in Mexico City. A monograph of his work, My Fellow Americans, was printed in 1990 and his upcoming monograph, You Are Here, explores worldwide urban landscapes and questions the intersections of traditional documentary photography to that of the digital. A National Endowment for the Arts Fellow, Jeff has been leading workshops nationwide for the last fifteen years.

Please bring: a portfolio of 10-20 of your favorite images, along with a group of those that didn’t make the edit,  your camera, and plenty of film.

Mark Citret: The World Around Us - Interiors/Exteriors Sat-Sun, August 21 - 22
In this two-day hands on workshop, Mark Citret will lead you on a journey of discovery. This class is for photographers who wish to create expressive images using light and structure and mine a rich and inexhaustible vein - the world around us. For every photographer there are images lurking out in the world that only they would make. This statement is based on the belief that each of us does indeed have our own take on the universe we inhabit.

In class you’ll learn to make pictures of spaces and places that no one else would make and learn to identify and trust your own vision. Field trips - to make new pictures - will offer sites of structural richness and visual intrigue. You’ll have the opportunity to view Citret’s work, share your images, and gain meaningful insight on the craft necessary to express your ideas. In a world of countless images it is tricky to distill out seductive distractions and get into one’s own essential way of seeing. Participants should have a good working knowledge of their cameras and understand basic exposure.

MARK CITRET is a San Francisco based photographer who studied under the visionary Ruth Bernhard.
