Lilo Raymond's photographs are inspired by the qualities of light and filled with an atmosphere of intimacy. Born in 1922, in Frankfurt, she fled to the United States as the Nazis came to power. She soon became involved with the Greenwich Village art scene, where she worked for a number of years as an artist's model and a tennis pro. In her early thirties, Raymond's childhood interest in photography was rekindled in a class taught by David Vestal at the Photo League. In 1977 she had her first solo show at the Marcuse Pfeifer Gallery and continued to exhibit regularly, most recently at the John Stevenson Gallery. Based in the Hudson Valley, Raymond's work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Victoria & Albert Museum, among others. A monograph entitled Revealing Light, (Bulfinch Press) was published in 1989. Since being the subject of the second solo exhibition at CPW in 1977, Lilo Raymond has had a long rich association with the organization that has included teaching workshops, serving as juror of the Photographers' Fellowship Fund, and leading earlier incarnations of CPW's Photographers' Salon which further nourished the growth and vision of emerging photographers living in upstate New York.
