For
the past five years, photojournalist Louie Palu
has been photographing the war in Kandahar, Afghanistan, building a body
of work that has been published and exhibited internationally. His
frontline coverage has been recognized as some of the most unique work to
come out of the conflict. Louie

work from his award winning photo essays. Following
his presentation, Palu (a CPW workshop alum) will participate in a
conversation with Woodstock-based photographer and Viet Nam War Veteran,

and photographing conflict and the evolution of Palu’s work since
completing his 12-year long documentary project entitled Cage
Call: Life and Death in the Hard Rock Mining Belt. Palu’s
documentary photography has appeared in numerous publications, festivals
and exhibitions internationally, which includes the photojournalism
festival Visa Pour L’Image in
Perpignan, France and the 2009 New York Photo Festival. He has been

| Lecture: Jamie Davis & Rachel Papo | Sun, February 27, 11 AM |
|
We are pleased to present NEAR HERE, a new lecture series featuring photographic artists and subject matter with strong ties to the Woodstock area. This occasional series will highlight the amazing talent that continues to be attracted to a region that boasts a historic commitment to artists and their practice. Refreshments will be served and there will be plenty of time for Q&A. The first lecture will feature the work of
Jamie Lyn Davis and Rachel Papo. Originally from New Jersey, Jamie Lyn Davis (Saugerties, NY) will discuss the recent shift in her work to photographing her immediate family after spending over a decade capturing silence in the American landscape, representing nature and vulnerablehumanness without people. Jamie received a MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts, The State University of New Jersey and a BFA from San Francisco Art Institute. She has exhibited in various solo and groups shows as well as completed a residency program at Vermont Studio Center. www.jamielynphotography.com Rachel Papo (Woodstock, NY) is drawn to photographing groups of people who are in stages of their lives similar to her own past experiences. She will discuss two such series: Serial No. 3817131, where she reconstructed facets of her life in the Israeli military, and Desperately Perfect, photographs of students at a demanding Russian ballet academy. Born in Ohio and raised in Israel, Rachel received a MFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts, and a BFA from Ohio State University. She was awarded a NYFA Fellowship in 2006 and a Lucie Award in 2009. www.rachelpapo.com Top
